Bestiary · named threats only

Every monster in the dark

The game ships no bestiary and no kill count. This page lists the threats walkthroughs actually name, plus the ones they only describe. Nothing here can be killed.

Source notes

This is an unofficial bestiary based on published walkthroughs. Named enemies are separated from descriptive labels; Moonbird belongs among non-hostile creatures, and no official complete monster count is claimed.

Named threats

The Dark Itself is the night made physical. It blocks paths as black fog, takes Potboy in chapter 5, and is the climax before the finale. You do not fight it. You follow the story and keep a light where the guide says to.

Molgrim is the chapter 2 creature in the swamps. She charges, she can grab Potboy, and she patrols. The chapter asks you to return three fragments. Hide in cover and tombs, pull her with candles, and do not stand in the charge. You cannot kill her.

The Grinner shows up in chapter 4 and again in chapter 6. It lunges. The faceplate opens on the charge. Blue slime wakes it; slow walking does not. Hit the open face with the Matchlock to stun it (the trophy Face Your Fears). Wardrobes work. In chapter 6, closing your eyes can make it vanish. Still not a kill.

Described, not officially named

Chapter 3’s Coalhaven has crawlers on patrol in the village and the manor. You steal a key and sneak past them. Blue-eyed ghosts and statues in chapters 3, 4, and 6 move or vanish when your eyes are shut. In chapter 4 a statue becomes a monster and has to be led onto a pressure plate with a candle.

Chapter 1 has a hunter the guides never name. It patrols, chases, and slams into walls. Crouch, use wardrobes and wall gaps. The last tunnel collapse traps it. I am not giving that hunter a name the game does not use.

Not enemies

Moonbird, in chapter 4, is a bird-shaped creature the gun-carriers hunt. It does not attack you. You follow its scene. Half-dead villagers and the talking head in chapters 2 and 3 give tasks. They belong on the character page, not in a fight.

Common questions

How many monsters are there?

No official total. This page only lists threats the chapter guides name or describe clearly.

Can you kill the Grinner?

No. The Matchlock stuns it when the faceplate is open. Chapter 6 can dismiss it by closing your eyes.

Is Molgrim optional?

No. Chapter 2 is her story: return three fragments, and do not try to fight her in the open.
