Is The Midnight Walk scary?

Short answer: uneasy, not a haunted-house ride. The fear is a hunter you cannot kill, listening while your eyes are shut, and a world that stays dark on purpose.

Source notes

Intensity is subjective. The content notes describe hiding, pursuit, darkness, and threatening creatures so readers can decide for themselves; a numerical fear score would not be a universal guarantee.

The direct answer

The Midnight Walk is a dark first-person adventure. There is no combat. Threats are avoided by hiding, by keeping a flame alive, and by using closed-eye listening and the eye-marked puzzles. The Shadow Work trophy wants a full minute of closed eyes across the game. That mechanic is the scare: you give up sight on purpose.

If you need a yes or no for a younger player: it is a horror-adjacent clay story, with monsters and chase scenes, and it is not a gore showcase in the sources I used. I have not rated it against a film board beyond the store pages. Check the rating on the store you buy from before you hand over a controller.

Where the tension actually is

Chapter 1 introduces a hunter you cannot kill. You use wardrobes and a gap in the wall, then a tunnel collapse traps it. Later chapters keep the pattern: lumpy creatures, narrow paths, and a flame that is both comfort and a target. The bestiary is on the monster page if you want names before you meet them.

VR changes the volume of that feeling, not the script. PS VR2 and PC VR are optional. Switch 2 has no VR. People asking “is the VR version too much” are asking about presence, and I have not logged a personal headset session. Road to VR’s write-up is the published note I would read before buying a headset for this specifically.

Who should skip it

Skip it if darkness, pursuit, or the idea of closing your eyes in a game is a hard no. The story also ends in a choice that some players find heavy; the endings page is spoiler-marked for that reason.

Stay if you liked the quiet cruelty of Little Nightmares or Inside more than you liked shooter horror. The games-like page is the longer comparison. Length is short, about 4–6 hours for the story, so the scare does not outstay a single night.

Common questions

Are there jump scares?

The published walkthroughs describe hunters and hiding, not a numbered jump-scare list. I am not inventing a count.

Is the VR version scarier?

Same story, more presence. VR is optional on PS5 and PC. Switch 2 is flat only.

Can you fight the monsters?

No. You hide, sneak, and use the flame. The hunter in chapter 1 is trapped, not killed by you.
