Characters on the walk

The game never publishes ages, heights, or backstories. These are the roles the chapters give people, and the jobs they do when you meet them.

Source notes

Character roles are summarized from the game description and published walkthroughs. No ages, heights, voice-cast credits, or unpublished biographies have been invented.

The pair you play

The Burnt One is you. You wake in pieces, without hearing or sight, and the soothsayers say you are the one who carries the torch to Moon Mountain. You never get a weapon that ends a life.

Potboy is the lantern. The flame is a resource and a weakness. You can send Potboy into pipes, onto pressure plates, and up to candles and fuses. It does not talk; it shrieks. Chapter 5 shatters it. You light it again. Both endings turn on what you do with that flame.

The voices between chapters

Housy is a walking house and the collectible cupboard. It joins in chapter 2. The cabinets show what a chapter is still missing. Potboy burns it by accident in chapter 5. It returns to help on Moon Mountain.

The Soulfisher is the fisherman at camp, a narrator between tales. After chapter 4’s watch over Housy, that figure is gone. Both endings still get the same farewell speech. The Soothsayers show up between chapters 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 to announce what is supposed to happen. Their last talk is in chapter 6.

People tied to one tale

The Headmaster leads the council in Nobodyville and is a woman. The in-game name is The Headmaster, not Headmistress. She hands you the Matchlock and asks you to deal with Molgrim, then thanks you. The Crone mourns at the Coalhaven graves and sends you after four bones — the child who stole matches to save a freezing cat. Auntie Murkle sits in that same grave-story, tied to a left arm and to “Who Took The Sun Away?” The Thief is the other body in that bone hunt.

The Craftsman is the heart of chapter 4 and the spark that chapter 5 says was lost. The Groundskeeper keeps the graves, runs the film, and opens the door after the movie. The Dark is the antagonist that takes Potboy. The Murkle are storytellers; the Story of the Murkle reels are their films, and Housy can play them.

Common questions

Does Potboy speak?

No dialogue. Guides describe non-verbal shrieks. You still direct where the flame goes.

Is the Headmaster a man?

The chapter notes describe her as a woman. The name on the figurine is The Headmaster.

Does Housy stay with you?

Housy joins in chapter 2, is burned in chapter 5, and returns for the Moon Mountain ending stretch.
